Canoe-camping- mountain climbing & cycle touring
|
Those of you who know me and who have been following me for a while, know that I usually like very active vacations...
Like cycle touring solo, carrying all of my camping geararound the Cabot Trail
A trip in the Gaspé the eastern tip of Quebec.
And Lac St Jean
This year was no exception. I decided to fit in 3 adventures into the 11 days I took off.
My boyfriend and I headed up to Tremblant, 90 minutes north of Montreal, where my dad has a cottage, as our "base camp." :)
We did take 2 rest days to start, spending time at a local beach near Brebeuf.

Early Saturday morning we grabbed a shuttle bus in Mont Tremblant Parc that took us and our rented canoe a 1 hour drive further up Devil's River. We would be on our own canoeing 25 kms (15.5 miles) down the river over the next 2 days
and we had reserved a campsite a little more than half way down.
As you can see, we amateurs only had garbage bags, instead of water proof bags for our stuff. If we tipped, no doubt everything would be a soggy mess and there were a number of rapids to get through!
Even though it was a cloudy day, the scenery was spectacular and there was only one other dad and son team that had set off before us.
Note to self, it may be a good idea to watch some Youtube videos about canoeing if the last time you went on a canoe camping trip you were about 12 years old!
We did start off by zig zagging quite a lot and the rapids were challenging to get through especially since the river is quite shallow making it easy to get caught up on the rocks.
Isn't it amazing when a tree grows right out of a rock? We did have some drizzle for a few hours, but nothing substantial, luckily!
We had the entire campsite to ourselves and the next day was sunny. We made it through many more rapids and were still smiling at the end of the day. :)
We camped at Lac Monroe, to be ready for adventure # 2!
Via Ferrata - A "safe" way to climb up and across mountain cliffs
|
2 years ago I was in Parc Fjord du Saguenay about 5 hours North East of Montreal and I tried the Via Ferrata. Italian for By way of iron.
They drill iron rungs and have cables in the cliff rock face. You wear a harness and always clip yourself in twice, so it is a secure way to climb up a cliff face.
There are 3 levels, I chose the middle one at the Fjord, which I found not too hard, and I was thrilled with the exhilarating experience, being so high up admiring the breathtaking views.
At Tremblant Parc I decided we'd try the hardest level. Our guide explained to me on the way, that Tremblant was the first Via Ferrata to be built in Quebec, and they made it super challenging for very athletic types. The rungs to climb up on were much further apart and the terrain was a lot more "mentally challenging." (read very scary!! )

We managed to get across the metal wire bridges etc, just in time, before a huge thunderstorm came in drenching us to the skin as we followed the path back down through the forest. Good thing we weren't camping that night!
2 day cycle touring the old train route 130 kms (80 miles)
|
After two more rest days (Ok, I admit I did wash all the cottage windows and cleaned out the porch...can you tell, I'm not great at doing nothing and relaxing?)
We were off for Adventure # 3!
We caught the shuttle bus that took us, our bikes and our bags an hour north of Tremblant to Mont Laurier. This is the beginning of the old train route which is now paved.

Starting at 201 kms. This was actually Phil's suggestion to bike here as he knows I love cycle touring.
Sunset over where we stayed at Lac Nominingue
We made it! 116 kms plus a few side trips... More beautiful scenery and fresh air... although I found that having every single km indicated along the way made it seem longer, and I admit, I was tired!
Maybe next vacation I should choose an all inclusive :)
