Last weekend I cross country skied on the weekend and skied downhill on Monday at Mont Tremblant with my boyfriend.
I am the youngest of five kids. As soon as I was able, around age five I began downhill ski lessons. I also spent two winters skiing in Lake Louise in the Rockies right after university, spoiled by tons of fresh powder. Since then I did very little downhill with the icy conditions around Montreal, the crowds and the high cost.
Instead, I took up cross country skiing and enjoyed that.
Last year I downhill skied for the first time in years with my boyfriend and even though I was rusty it went OK.
He has the highest level of ski instructor, level 4, he has incredible style. Silly, but I found this intimidating.
On Monday my inner saboteur took over. I struggled in the trees and on some hills with moguls and I fell twice, the second time landing really hard on the ice on my bum. Ouch!
My inner saboteur was telling me I was not good enough.
Has this ever happened to you? You''re trying to do something and your inner saboteur starts putting you down?
We can call this inner saboteur Harriet or Harry. We need to take Harriet down but often Harriet has been in charge for a long time and she's not going to go down without a battle!
When you want to lose weight, she might tell you, "just one bite, you'll only have one, you can start again tomorrow, or on Monday, you can't do this, why bother, you'll never be able to do this, why even try?"
If Harriet has been driving the bus it's time to throw her off the bus and take control.
One of my clients said that she would throw Harriet under the bus!! Ha, I Love it!
Do what you need to, catch the negative thoughts and switch them to positive ones, You can do this.
I am a great skier and usually Harriet is quiet... with more practice on the bumps and in the trees I'll improve. It's normal to be rusty and struggling with new equipment I'm not used to. I will get there!
And you will too!
