Vitamin Must Haves For Winter:
What vitamins do you need for winter?
It is a little hard to generalize, because just like your body type healthy eating plan, everyone's needs are different. Although here are a few guidelines:
Vitamin D is essential for everyone living in the Northern Hemisphere
|
We get most of our vitamin D from the sun and very little from the food we eat. Unless you are living in the tropics or a warm climate where you are out in the sun very often, you need to supplement vitamin D from fall until summer.
Years ago researchers linked a higher incidence of colon cancer in the northern hemisphere compared to the southern hemisphere, to a lack of vitamin D.
One of my friends in my cycling club in Montreal, is an MD. He started testing his patients' vitamin D levels. 80% of them were vitamin D deficient.
Also, If a 35 year old women and a 65 year old women walk in the sun for ten minutes, the 35 year old will manufacture 3 times as much vitamin D. As we age we absorb less vitamins and our need increases.

In our harsh - dry winters it's necessary to keep the body hydrated with lots of pure water and healthy fats. It's hard to get enough healthy fats from diet alone.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are essential! They strengthen skin membranes, keep skin moist and supple, while reducing inflammation of the skin and body. They are also important for hormonal balance which in turn affects the quality of skin.
Fish oil helps with the normal development and functioning of the brain, it nourishes the nervous system. It improves mood and helps depression, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Lou Gehrigs, and MS. The brain is fatty, so I love to know I'm nourishing my brain every day with a good quality omega 3 supplement.

Do you need a multivitamin?
No, not if …
- The soil where your food is grown is rich in organic nutrients (due to mass farming our soils are usually depleted of nutrients)
- You don’t eat any food that is grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers (these hinder the absorption of vitamins from our food)
- You eat only fresh, organic vegetables, rarely cooked
- You are not exposed to any air pollution or chemicals
- You drink plenty of pure water
- You always get enough sleep and never burn the candle at both ends
- You do not have any stress
- You get plenty of sunshine every day
- You are under the age of 30
We do not live in a perfect world! In going through this list I think you’ll agree that we can all benefit from supplementing our diets with a multivitamin.
As I motioned at the beginning, everyone's needs are different. I love my complex B vitamin as it keeps me calm! If you'd like some help determining which vitamins are best for you, and how to ensure your getting really good quality, message me and I'd be happy to help you out.
