Azodicarbonamide in bread

Did you see the headlines this week? Subway is removing azodicarbonamide from it's bread after food blogger Vani Hari sent them a petition signed by 68,000 people. This chemical, used in yoga mats and rubber soled shoes has been banned in Europe and Australia.

Of course there are many chemicals in the food in all fast food places, no surprise there! However, a bigger deception is that the main ingredient in their bread is enriched wheat flour. This is refined white flour, that has been colored brown with caramel coloring, leading you to believe you are eating something brown and therefore more healthy than white bread.

Check the ingredients in your bread. Enriched wheat flour has been refined removing almost all the vitamins and minerals and adding in a few synthetic vitamins to "enrich" it. A more healthy choice is bread made with spelt or kamut flour, or whole grain in a pinch.

Homemade Ketchup
 Here is a fast, tasty recipe that cuts out the added sugar and salt that regular ketchup contains.

Homemade Ketchup


1 twelve ounce can of tomato paste (no sodium)
1/2 cup unpateurized apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup water
1/2 teaspoon sun dried sea salt
1 teaspoon oregano
1/8 teaspoon cumin
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
squeeze of garlic from press or 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix all of the ingredients together. Store in a jar in the refrigerator. Makes 1 ¾ cups.
